Weekend Rewind: Karnataka Elections, Imran Khan, Twitter CEO, Supreme Court, Iran and UNHRC (!)

#KarnatakaElections

Another election, another phase of heightened action and spike in revenue for news media, digital channels, political workers and campaign managers. Every election has its significance but this one being the first of a few this year with elections for parliament due next year, was of particular interest across the country. The results seem aligned with what several pre and exit polls said. Some were notably off target. Some political observers say pre-poll surveys have become an additional revenue stream for media. But why attribute to unethical practices what can be adequately explained by inadequacy? What is evident is that trust in some news media brands has touched new lows, when you thought it couldn’t get any worse. That said, entertainment value and loyalties of those aligned with the news brand’s slant, are likely to keep those viewers glued.

Skip lapdogs today. Stick to independent outlets. And when such a fine team is assembling for the job, you’ll get timely updates and sensible commentary. @thenewsminute @thewire_in @thecaravanindia @newslaundry @scroll_in in one place. What’s not to like?! https://t.co/4HV5kH07lA

#ImranKhan

What a spectacle. Informed commentary warns us that the cult status that Imran Khan has earned thanks to his arrest and attendant protests may not last. Watchers warn us that it is a matter of time before the army moves in for the kill. Indicators include that the army man’s house that was ransacked by Khan’s supporters was vacated a week prior. There are social media posts on a family’s car being torched by the police themselves – only to blame it on protestors. Editorials state that the public attacking the army may have united the army. The signs are ominous. For now, Khan is king.

#TwitterCEO

There is never a dull moment as far as Elon Musk is concerned. The moment he mentioned female CEO, social media was flooded with Ellen Musks and the like. The fake follow-up posts suggesting who Musk’s successor might be included adult AI models and musicians who had fallen out of favour with the Tesla honcho. Hopefully now, with a seasoned professional who understands how advertising works and has goodwill across the board, Twitter’s fortunes will soar. Hopefully, we will also see Musk in the news more for Tesla and SpaceX than the micro-blogging platform.

I am excited to welcome Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of Twitter!

@LindaYacc will focus primarily on business operations, while I focus on product design & new technology.

Looking forward to working with Linda to transform this platform into X, the everything app. https://t.co/TiSJtTWuky

#SupremeCourt

Not just in India, but everywhere from the US to Pakistan, Supreme Courts had their hands full. But let’s keep it to India. From someone approaching the court to demand an additional stop for a Vande Bharat train in Kerala to more pressing matters, the agenda was diverse and riveting. The Maharashtra verdict was a mixed bag, allowing both sides to claim victory. Of course, one of which was only a ‘moral’ victory and the BJP continues to rule, but the court pointed out what was wrong. It did the same in Delhi, where the AAP is rejoicing as are champions of federalism. But soon after the Delhi government attempted action on the basis of the judgement, the LG is once again playing hardball. Same-sex marriages is another agenda before the court that is being eagerly watched. We should be grateful to platforms like LiveLaw (and others) that are bringing us the news from the SC as it happens in a language we can understand.

#MahsaAmini #IranProtests

The UN Economic and Social Council voted in December 2022 to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). Its four-year term was to end in 2026. The move followed the crackdown on protests against 22-year-old Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody a couple of months prior.

On 11 May 2023, news arrived that Iran had secured a senior role at the UNHRC, the same week it hanged Yousef Mehrad and Sadrollah Fazeli Zare on charges of blasphemy – they participated in a social media event titled ‘Critique of Superstition and Religion’. Iran will serve as chair of the Human Rights Council Social Forum for a year. The focus will be on how technology can be used to promote human rights.

A little more than a week prior, three jailed Iranian women whose reporting drove the nationwide protests after Amini’s death were announced as recipients of a Press Freedom Award from UNESCO.

The inexplicable appointment of Iran’s rep to the UNHRC – even as there are explanations about the process and how it came to be – is regrettable. Even if it was a choice made by some countries, it must be revoked for UNHRC to retain its credibility.

⬇️ 2 million views—the world is outraged. Let me be clear: I’m not singling out the UNHRC Chair (@CZmissionGeneva) for this terrible appointment. The Asian group nominated Iran—the only nominee. But all Member States should have mobilized to say: No way. Whole UNHRC is to blame. https://t.co/Fy8JwUOn2d

We have to keep trying.I am happy that these are all started and going forward. IR and IRGC are fascists in nature and will continue to commit crimes.Crimes that can not be kept hidden anymore. Final victory is near. By iranian people inside and all around the world.#MahsaAmini https://t.co/NbmGm8ASzv
