Social Media and TV Preferred by Urban Indians for Paris 2024 Olympics

As Paris gears up to host the 2024 Olympics, recent data from YouGov reveals that among urban Indians preparing to follow the event, the majority are set to rely on social media updates (55%) and TV broadcasts (54%) for keeping up with the games. 

Additionally, nearly half of them (47%) plan to stream the event online, while more than a third (36%) will seek coverage through newspapers or news sites. Moreover, a significant portion (22%) intends to watch the games at sports bars or other broadcasting venues, whereas a smaller fraction (11%) aims to experience the action live in Paris at Olympic venues.

Men are more likely than women to follow the Olympics via online streaming (52% men vs 42% women).

Among the age groups, TV broadcast as a viewing option is more popular among adults aged 45 and older as compared to the younger demographics. Saying updated about the games through newspapers is notably more popular among 55+ adults (at 49%) as compared to the rest. 

When asked why they watch the Olympics, more than half of urban Indians who watch the games (55%) said they do so to support their country’s athletes.

Two in five (42%) watch to enjoy the spectacle and excitement of the event, while a third do so to feel a part of a global spectacle (33%) or to witness participating athletes’ feats and performances (32%). A fifth watch the games because their friends and family do so (19%).

Viacom18 Media Private Limited (Viacom18) has secured the exclusive media rights to broadcast the Olympic Games Paris 2024, plus non-exclusive rights to the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024, in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Viacom18 will provide multi-platform coverage of the Games, and ensure free-to-air television coverage within the region.
